Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. This UNESCO World Heritage site consists of five separate caverns carved under a massive overhanging rock, serving as a sacred pilgrimage destination for over 22 centuries. The temple is a year-round destination, but visiting in the early morning or late afternoon is ideal to avoid the midday heat and the larger crowds. The climb up the rock is much more comfortable when the sun is lower in the sky.
As a sacred religious site, visitors must cover their shoulders and knees. You are also required to remove your shoes and hats before entering the cave complex. It is recommended to bring a pair of socks to protect your feet from the heat of the stone pavement.
Tickets must be purchased at the ticket office at the base of the hill before you begin your ascent. There is no ticket counter at the top near the cave entrance, so ensuring you have your pass beforehand is essential to avoid climbing back down.
Photography is generally permitted, but the use of flash is strictly prohibited as it can damage the ancient mural pigments. You must never pose for a photo with your back turned toward a Buddha statue, as this is considered disrespectful in Sri Lankan culture.
The ascent involves a walk up several hundred stone steps, taking approximately 15 to 20 minutes. While the path is well maintained and not overly steep, it does require a moderate level of fitness. There are plenty of shaded spots along the way to rest and enjoy the views.
