Minneriya National Park is a premier wildlife destination in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, world renowned for hosting “The Gathering” the largest seasonal meeting of Asian Elephants on earth. During the dry season, hundreds of elephants migrate from surrounding forests to the banks of the ancient Minneriya Tank, a massive reservoir built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century. You can witness these majestic herds socialising, bathing, and grazing on the fresh grass exposed by the receding water levels. The park’s landscape is a vibrant mix of low canopy forests, wetlands, and scrublands, providing an ideal open air stage for observing these gentle giants in their natural social structures.
The park’s ecosystem supports a rich variety of life beyond its famous elephants, making every safari an unpredictable adventure. You can spot large flocks of water birds such as Little Cormorants and Painted Storks, as well as terrestrial mammals like the purple faced langur and the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. The reservoir itself is a vital lifeline for the region, attracting mugger crocodiles and various species of fish that sustain the local avian population. Travelers seeking a high impact wildlife experience will find Minneriya to be an essential stop, offering some of the most spectacular and reliable wildlife viewing opportunities in South Asia.

The world famous “Gathering” occurs during the dry season, peaking between August and September. During this time, up to 300 elephants congregate around the reservoir, offering a wildlife spectacle that is unique to this park.
Yes, Minneriya is a year-round destination, but elephant locations shift. If the herds move to neighboring Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park during certain months, local safari drivers will typically know which park offers the best sightings on that specific day.
A standard safari lasts approximately 3 hours. While morning tours are available, afternoon safaris (starting around 3:00 PM) are most popular because elephants tend to emerge from the forest shade toward the water as the temperature drops.
The park is conveniently located in the Cultural Triangle, about 20 minutes from Habarana and 30 minutes from Sigiriya. Its central location makes it an easy afternoon excursion for travelers staying in these major heritage hubs.
