Kandy is the cultural heart of Sri Lanka, nestled among mist covered peaks and lush tea plantations in the island’s central highlands. This UNESCO World Heritage city served as the final capital of the ancient kings, preserving a legacy of art, music, and religious devotion that remains vibrant today. The city center is dominated by the serene Kandy Lake, an artificial reservoir built by the last king, which provides a peaceful backdrop for evening strolls. You can explore the bustling local markets filled with exotic spices and handcrafted textiles, or witness a traditional Kandyan dance performance where rhythmic drumming and fire walking showcase the region’s unique heritage.
The crown jewel of the city is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, an architectural masterpiece that houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic. You can join white clad pilgrims during the daily “Thewava” ceremonies, where the sound of silver trumpets and drums fills the air. Beyond the temple, the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens offers a sprawling escape into nature, featuring giant Javan fig trees and an exquisite collection of orchids. Travelers seeking a blend of spiritual depth and colonial charm will find Kandy an essential stop, especially during the grand Esala Perahera festival when the city transforms into a spectacular theater of decorated elephants and traditional dancers.

Kandy is a year-round destination, but the most popular time is during the Esala Perahera in July or August. For the best weather, visit between December and April, when the days are bright and the evenings in the hill country are pleasantly cool.
Visitors must wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and you must remove your shoes before entering the temple complex. It is best to visit during the morning or evening puja times to witness the traditional drumming and ritual ceremonies.
A 2 day stay is usually sufficient to visit the Temple of the Tooth, the Botanical Gardens, and a cultural show. If you plan to use Kandy as a base for day trips to nearby tea factories or the Knuckles Mountain Range, consider staying for three days.
